Craig's top 5 tips on how to incorporate sound into your spa or salon

1. Music - a plethora of “Spa Music” is now available, specifically for use in spa environments. Don’t just settle for several compilations from this genre, choose music that reflects the design and passion of your space and respect the opinion of others on your team.

2. Ambient sound - the sounds in your spa can influence clients and their desire to spend time with you. Separate and minimize sound sources: phones, computers, printers etc, especially in reception and waiting areas and encourage clients to do the same. Request confidently as a part of Meet and Greet that mobile phones are switched to silent.

3. Volume - we all know people whose voice can be heard over all else. Keep your team adherent to protocol in regards to personal communication at work. Therapists chatting in prep rooms and during treatments is going to happen and is a common complaint from clients but keep an ear on the volume.

4. Sound proofing - if construction is in progress, place sound proofing material in the walls, it’s well worth the expense. In existing salons, have acoustic foam strips fitted to all treatment room door frames, ensure equipment is well maintained (no squeaks) and insulate surfaces in rooms with thin rubber mats so product bottles, stones, treatment gear clatter is reduced.

5. Marketing - use music and ambient sounds in your e-marketing. Have a professional produce CDs that are signature to your space and brand them. On open days or even one special day per week invite a musician to play in the waiting area. Hold regular events to promote your space and include music/sound components.
